Aurora Awards
The time has almost arrived for the Aurora Awards in Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy! The process will begin next week with nominations opening. The Aurora Awards is a chance for authors and readers to select the best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the past year. To declare your eligibility, or nominate your favourite work, you simply need to be a member of the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association. http://www.prixaurorawards.ca/
Aurora awards are open to Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Through the Aurora Awards, the CSFFA encourages Canadian fans to take an active role in selecting the best of genre fiction and related activities. See the 2016 winners at the CSFFA website. http://www.prixaurorawards.ca/2016-aurora-awards-winners/
Aside from being a part of the process, membership gives you the benefit of hundreds of dollars worth of content from today’s best authors in Science Fiction and Fantasy!
Canada Reads 2017
Wouldn’t it be great if the entire country read and discussed some of Canada’s top Science Fiction! It’s your opportunity to vote for the theme of the next Canada Reads Debates on CBC. What’s even cooler, there’s a good chance that someone you know may be selected for the shortlist!
Canada Reads is an annual “battle of the books” competition organized and broadcast by Canada’s public broadcaster, the CBC. The program has aired annually in two distinct editions, the English-language Canada Reads on CBC Radio One, and the French-language Le Combat des livres on Première Chaîne.
During Canada Reads, five personalities champion five different books, each champion extolling the merits of one of the titles. The debate is broadcast over a series of five programs. At the end of each episode, the panellists vote one title out of the competition until only one book remains. This book is then billed as the book that all of Canada should read.
How do you vote? Go to http://www.cbc.ca/books/2016/10/canada-reads-theme-survey.html and select your favourite theme!

IFWA will hold the contest in conjunction with the new When Words Collide literary convention to promote the writing and enjoyment of popular fiction in all its forms.
Poor Man’s Workshop
The poor man’s workshop evolved from the many wonderful full writing workshops run around the world. The big difference is that the main focus of this workshop is to critique each other’s work. While in other full workshops, visiting authors may be brought in to teach and mentor the participants. In a poor man’s workshop, participants mentor each other. Writing workshops are a chance to critique and be critiqued by 9 other authors over the course of a weekend. This workshop will run over two days. You will receive your package of stories no later than August 15th, and will have two months to complete your critiques. All stories should be read and critiqued before the event.
