General Events

Our public calendar shows IFWA organized events as well as events hosted by our members. Feel free to attend author readings, book launches, or regular meetings as posted. We are happy to be one of Calgary’s active writing groups.


Poor Man’s Workshop:

October 15-16th, 2016

A poor man’s workshop is a chance to critique and be critiqued by 9 other authors over the course of a weekend. This workshop will run over two days. You will receive your package of stories no later than August 15th, and will have two months to complete your critiques. All stories should be read and critiqued before the event.

Saturday 9:00 – 5:00 (lunch and refreshment’s provided)
Sunday 12:00 – 5:00 (refreshment’s provided)

*if you have special dietary requirements, please make your own arrangements.

In order to register you must pay the fee AND submit your short story, (Max 5918 words) to the event coordinators. Email ifwaevents@gmail.com to submit with the subject line October Poor Man’s Workshop.

Deadline for participation: August 1st, 2016 (payment and story must be received by this time. Spots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis).

Note: New stories are encouraged! Challenge yourself! However, previously written, unpublished stories can also be submitted.

Artist Showcase: In Places Between Fundraiser:

Showcasing the artwork from the recently published In Places Between.

Books and artwork available for purchase. Talk to the authors and meet the artists! This event will showcase the volunteers that submitted artwork to make the event a success. We appreciate their hard work and willingness to support the contest and publication. All proceeds go toward the In Places Between story contest, supporting the ongoing short story contest, In Places Between.

What is In Places Between?

Four Calgary Writers’ groups, Calgary’s Imaginative Fiction Writers Association, Calgary Crime Writers, the Alberta Romance Writers’ Association and the Alexandra Writers’ Society, invite you to submit your original written works of fiction to our 2016 short story contest ‘In Places Between’.

IFWA will hold the contest in conjunction with the new When Words Collide literary convention to promote the writing and enjoyment of popular fiction in all its forms.


IFWA Special Events

IFWA organizes and participates in many special writing events including:

Workshops

Each year IFWA organizes a reasonably priced, local writing workshop for a limited number of members. Past workshop leaders include such distinguished writing professionals as Robert J. Sawyer, Ben Bova, Mike Resnick, R. Scott Bakker, Connie Willis, Jack McDevitt, James Alan Gardner, Edo van Belkom and others.

Readings

Throughout the year there are opportunities for IFWA members to read publicly at venues such as bookstores and libraries.

Retreats

Two times per year IFWA organizes an informal retreat where members can gather for the weekend and dedicate time to writing. There is no cost and it is not an overnight thing (unless you want to write all night!). Saturday night features readings and a pizza party.

When Words Collide

When Words Collide is Calgary’s festival for readers and writers. IFWits participate in both panels, such as the popular Writers at the Improv, and on the entertainment side of things, with radio-plays, a and readings. IFWA also holds a contest in association with When Words Collide.

Short Story Contest

Once per year IFWA organizes a short story contest for new authors. Other

There are often other, less formal events such as barbecues, movie nights and fundraisers. IFWits who attend other conventions and events report back to the group at monthly meetings.
